This is more of a thriller than a mystery novel. This book tells two separate stories at the same time. Joanna is a real woman with the same issues as working women. Killings in Massachusetts and Arizona come together and she has to solve this mystery and also find the evil in her town. Sheriff Joanna Brady has to solve two murders. The first one is Junior Dawdle, a disabled man living with an older couple in Bisbee. His life takes a tragic turn when he’s found dead at the bottom of a cave. The second murder is linked to Liza, a waitress in Massachusetts. After her difficult mother passes away, she escapes to Bisbee using a network for abused spouses.

This book tells two separate stories that eventually come together. In one, there’s Liza Matter, a young woman dealing with her mentally ill mother and living in a messy home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. She created her own life after leaving home at a young age because of a mentally ill and abusive mother. She wants to savor life now and put an end to her mother’s penny-pinching ways that led to years of hunger and suffering. In the other story, we have Sheriff Joanna Brady, a law enforcement officer in a small Arizona town. She’s trying to unravel the mysterious death of a developmentally delayed man named Junior. He’s discovered at the base of a cave ledge, along with an abused kitten. These two seemingly unrelated tales gradually connect as the story unfolds.
Sheriff Joanna Brady has to solve two murders. The first one is Junior Dawdle, a disabled man living with an older couple in Bisbee. His life takes a tragic turn when he’s found dead at the bottom of a cave. He wanders off into the night and falls into a hole inside a cave, dying from the 40-foot drop.
The second murder is linked to Liza, a waitress in Massachusetts. She lives in her mother’s house. Her mother, Thelma, is dying, and Lisa has to handle her affairs. While cleaning the house, Lisa finds a lot of money. Unfortunately, people who try to help her end up dead, and Thelma’s house is set on fire on the day of her funeral. In another part of the country, in Bixby, Arizona, Dr. Massachusetts, who is Lisa’s half-brother, is found murdered and tortured. After her difficult mother passes away, she escapes to Bisbee using a network for abused spouses. Joanna and her team put in a lot of effort to catch the killers before they can strike again. Joanna and the staff burn the midnight oil to find the killers before they kill again.

I appreciate the step-by-step approach taken by the police to solve cases and the element of surprise that keeps the investigation going. Joanna’s personal life adds an intriguing dimension to her role as a sheriff.
Overall, a good thriller story and Jance does her usual satisfying twist at the end. This story features two separate cases happening at the same time, each starting in different regions of the country. The characters are appealing, and the storyline is both unique and engaging.
