Venus is thirteen years old. She lives with her mother Inez, a stepfather, and her dear younger brother Leo. Leo has special needs because he is mentally handicapped. He understands that Venus is red, sees music as yellow, and a young girl takes care of him. In many ways, Venus takes care of Leo. She loves him and knows him well. She helps him with his daily routines and keeps him close. Leo looks to her for guidance and comfort, even though he can’t fully understand love. She’s a good student and loves studying the stars. But she does something really bad that splits up her family. This also gets them a lot of attention in the media.
Venus is typically a good and smart girl. Something terrible happens. Venus kills her stepfather. She won’t talk about it except to blame her mother. As a result, charged with a terrible crime, she is sent to a place for young people who break the law. Venus is sent to a juvenile detention home. In prison, Venus served a sentence for a crime she committed when she was 13. She stayed there for five years. During that time, her brother Leo goes missing. He’s taken by her stepfather’s brother and ends up living with a tattoo artist and his young daughter. When Venus is out of prison with a new identity she sees the change in everything. She wants to start fresh in Seattle, but her past keeps coming back. She meets new people and faces old memories.
She decides to start a new life. She wants to leave her past behind and avoid being hurt or let down again. Her past keeps bothering her until she deals with her fears. To make it happen, she needs to discover what happened to her brother. She also has to reveal the truth about the night her life changed.

This is a great story with different characters sharing their experiences, filled with both tough times and hope. There’s a strong message about forgiveness and hope. It’s a young adult book, so it keeps things non-graphic. Some parts of the past are a surprise until the end.
I like that this book shows how tough it is for people to leave prison. Even after their sentence, life isn’t simple. They have to work hard to start anew, especially when the world has changed. It’s a big challenge for them to fit in again.
