“Never Let Me Go” is a mystery and a beautiful love story. “Never Let Me Go” unfolds in a slightly different England, narrated by Kathy. The story centers on Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy, born with a unique purpose. They are clones designed for organ donation.
Kathy is a schoolgirl who leaves the school after she grows up into a young woman. Kathy, now 31, is a former student at an English boarding school in Hailsham. Hailsham is a school for kids with a special purpose. All education in this school is geared towards conditioning its student to accept their “special” destiny as a given. As Kathy is getting ready to make her first donation while being a career for other donors, she recounts her life in Hailsham and on her own, mostly in the form of anecdotes about herself and her best friends Ruth and Tommy, their rivalries, jealousies, and affection for each other. There is nothing particularly shocking, gruesome, or intense about Kathy’s story, yet it leaves you with a sense of being a part of a nightmare.
Tommy is a male donor and a childhood friend of Kathy. He is an uncreative and isolated young boy at Hailsham. He is a quiet and sad teenager. As he matures, Tommy becomes a young man who is generally calm and thoughtful.
Ruth is a female donor from Hailsham who is described by Kathy as bossy. Her hopes are crushed as she realizes that she was born to be a donor and has no other future. Ruth transforms to become a more aware person and begins to think about things in depth. She constantly tries to fit in and be mature and repudiates things from her past. Ruth gives up on all of her hopes and dreams and tries to help Kathy and Tommy have a better life.
Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy move to the Cottages when they are 16 years old. It is the first time they are allowed in the outside world, but they keep to themselves most of the time. Ruth and Tommy are still together, and Kathy has some sexual relationships with other men.
Hailsham appears to be a regular school where students are raised with peculiar rules. However, they are unaware of their future. Kathy develops a fondness for Tommy, looking after him when he is bullied and having private talks with him. However, Ruth and Tommy begin a romantic relationship during their time at the school that continues when they leave. Tommy, knowing that his next donation will end his life, confronts Kathy about her work as a career. Kathy resigns from Tommy’s career but still visits him. The novel ends after Tommy’s “completion”, and Kathy drives up to Norfolk and briefly fantasizes about everything she remembers and everything she lost.

It’s a sad story, but the author doesn’t overwhelm you with it all at once. There are moments of hope scattered throughout the book. At the start, even though I knew the purpose of the “students” in society, I held onto the hope that their art would somehow outweigh the importance of their organ donations. It’s only in the final pages that I accepted the reality that Tommy, Ruth, and Kathy would end their lives as organ donors.
Overall, I found it uninteresting and not very enjoyable. The whole story seems quite immature and ordinary. This book is like a soccer player with a broken leg. He has potential but when you think he’s going to recover, he doesn’t. That soccer player is useless, just like this book. I’ve let “Never Let Me Go”, go.
